It was a shootout when these two teams met in the 2013 regular-season finale. St. Thomas Academy squeaked out a 35-28 victory to finish the season 6-2. The Cadets then won two games in the Class 5A playoffs before falling to Henry Sibly in the Section 5 final.

Last year's loss to the Cadets spoiled South St. Paul's bid for a perfect regular season, but the Packers went on to earn two wins in Class 4A, Section 4 play and reach the state tournament. The run ended in the quarterfinals with a 48-28 loss to eventual state champion Hutchinson.

The Cadets defeated the Packers in the regular season finale in both 2012 and 2013, both times breaking a South St. Paul seven-game winning streak.
