Woodbury grad talks about his high school career, walking on at Stanford

Woodbury senior defensive end Torsten Rotto played in Saturday’s Minnesota High School All-Star Football game at TCF Bank Stadium. He talked about the recruiting process and walking on at Stanford.

You put a lot of effort into your recruitment.
Talk about it. After my junior year, I started doing combines and getting my name out there. After that, my dad and I developed a road map of where I wanted to do summer camps. I ended up doing 12 camps.

How many miles did you put on? Well, Minnesota, to Iowa, up to North Dakota, out to Stanford, over to Illinois and out to Harvard and Boston and all around. Across the lower 48, for sure.

You saw a lot of the country. Yeah. It was like an American history trip and recruiting trip all in one.

Why Stanford? Well, Eastern Illinois offered a full scholarship. Princeton wanted me on the team. Minnesota wanted me to walk on and Stanford did, too. Stanford is such a good school, it’s hard to turn away from that.

What did they tell you? I did their camp and did some good things there. They followed up about a month later and said they had a walk-on spot there if I wanted it.

Did anything influence your decision? I was checking the weather on my phone the other day and it said thunderstorms for Minnesota for the entire five-day forecast. For Palo Alto, it said sunny and 65 for the entire time.
