Patience paid off Friday for Chaska senior quarterback Connor Souba.

After Chanhassen contained Chaska for almost the entire first half, Souba scored two 3-yard rushing touchdowns as the Hawks won 14-0 at Chanhassen. Chaska reclaimed the rivalry jug trophy after losing twice to its intra-school district rival last year.

“This year, coming back and beating them is absolutely huge, and it’s going to be a great memory,” Souba said.

His first touchdown came with 3:34 left in the half, when run-minded Chaska (3-0) began a drive after senior linebacker Evan Oetter’s fumble recovery. Souba credited the offensive line.

“They just needed to get their legs under them and get low and be physical,” Souba said.

In the third quarter, Souba completed passes of 26 yards to senior McKay Hardy and 16 yards to sophomore Connor Deeds. They helped set up Souba’s second touchdown with 8:01 left.

“I was just really seeing the defense a lot better in the second half,” Souba said.

Chanhassen (2-1) drove inside the Hawks 20-yard line twice, but Chaska stopped both attempts. Senior defensive back Clay Atkinson sealed the victory with an interception on the second drive.

The Storm dealt with injuries. Running backs Eddie Odanga and Hunter Flannery were dinged up but played, and quarterback Jacob Miller was injured during the second half.

“Once our team gets healthy I think we’ll do just fine,” Miller said.
