Perennial juggernaut Eden Prairie was ranked the top team of Class 6A in the first Associated Press Minnesota High School Football poll on Wednesday. The Eagles (1-0) dismantled Eastview 35-7 last Thursday, scoring 35 points unanswered through the first three quarters.
Lakeville North was selected second and rightfully so; the Panthers (1-0) posted a gaudy 62-0 shutout of Burnsville to open their season on Aug. 31. Lakeville North and Eden Prairie will face each other this Friday to determine which team will remain at the pinnacle of the poll.
Defending big-school champion, Totino-Grace (1-0), sits at No. 3 after its 13-point fourth-quarter comeback against No. 12 Cretin-Derham Hall (0-1). No. 4 Blaine (1-0) throttled Stillwater 53-28 last Thursday and will face Class 6A newcomer, No. 11 St. Michael-Albertville (1-0).
Fifth-ranked Maple Grove (1-0) beat Osseo 28-7 last week and will face No. 9 Prior Lake after the Lakers (1-0) rolled Shakopee 42-12. Sixth-ranked Edina (1-0) defeated Lakeville South last week, while No. 7 Champlin Park edged East Ridge 34-13. Minnetonka earned the No. 7 rank after a 42-7 win over Eagan. The Skippers (1-0) will visit Metro West Division rival, No. 10 Wayzata, on Friday after the Trojans' (1-0) 28-27 victory over Rosemount a week ago.
Defending Class 5A champion, Elk River (1-0), maintains its No. 1 position after a 44-31 win over Moorhead a week ago. Owatonna (1-0) surfaced at No. 2 in the poll following a 61-0 shutout of Faribault on Friday. Fellow Big Southeast Division foe Mankato West (1-0) took the third spot following a 28-0 shutout on the road at Rochester Century.
No. 4 Apple Valley (1-0) rolled Hopkins 27-7 and will take on 2015 Class 5A runner up, No. 16 St. Thomas Academy (1-0), this week. No. 5 Alexandria (1-0) survived a 34-28 shootout with No. 13 Andover (0-1) a week ago.
Mahtomedi needed a 21-point comeback in the fourth quarter to edge Simley 35-28 last Friday. The sixth-ranked Zephyrs (1-0) will face No. 11 Park of Cottage Grove (1-0) this week.
Irondale (1-0) scored all of its points in a 35-0 shutout of Spring Lake Park in the first half and claimed the No. 7 ranking with its eye-opening win. No. 8 Chanhassen saw struggles early-on in its victory against Robbinsdale Armstrong, but the Storm scored 29 points unanswered in a 29-10 decision.
No. 9 St. Cloud Tech (1-0) clobbered crosstown rival, St. Cloud Apollo, 42-16, while No. 10 Robbinsdale Cooper (1-0) showed its firepower, scoring 33 points in the second quarter of a 39-21 win over Park Center.
The Class 4A poll is razor-thin with seven points serving the difference between top-ranked Winona and No. 4 Benilde-St. Margaret's, the defending Class 4A champion. Both teams earned three first place votes in the opening poll.
The Winhawks (1-0) opened the season with a 50-14 romping of Rochester John Marshall and collected 65 total points in the poll. No. 2 Marshall (1-0) follows with 62 points, but asserted its dominance by dropping a 70-point shutout on Albert Lea.
Third-ranked South St. Paul (1-0) bested Tartan 34-6, while the Red Knights (1-0) defeated Waconia 28-14. No. 5 Hutchinson (1-0) sped past Monticello 34-6.
No. 6 Rocori, No. 7 Becker, No. 8 Holy Angels, No. 9 Hermantown and No. 10 Orono round out the top 10 following wins in Week 1.
Defending Class 3A champion Rochester Lourdes claimed the No. 1 spot in the poll, garnering five first-place votes. Those votes served as a tiebreaker as the Eagles tied No. 2 St. Croix Lutheran with 74 total points this week. Rochester Lourdes (1-0) narrowly escaped Week 1 with a 22-19 win over No, 20 Zumbrota-Mazeppa, while the Knights rolled Providence Academy 40-12.
Pierz's 69-0 romping of Milaca propelled the Pioneers (1-0) to the No. 3 spot, followed by No. 4 Jackson County Central (1-0), which beat Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 34-8 last week. No. 5 Stewartville (1-0) defeated Dover-Eyota 51-6 in the Tigers' Class 3A debut.
No. 6 Glencoe-Silver Lake (1-0) established its run-game early, scoring 24 first-half points in a 42-17 win over Foley. No. 7 Tri-City United (1-0) held Belle Plain to a field goal in a 25-3 victory on Friday. No. 8 Pequot Lakes (1-0) and No. 9 Litchfield both put together shutouts last week as the Eagles rolled Staples-Motley 52-0 and the Dragons beat St. Cloud Cathedral 25-0. Proctor (1-0) closes out the top 10 after the Rails' 33-22 win over International Falls where the Broncos scored all 22 of their points in the final quarter.
Two-time defending Class 2A champion, Caledonia (1-0), retains its top rank after the Warriors' 39-7 win over Lake City a week ago. Caledonia was awarded all six of the top votes in the poll.
Runner-up, Eden Valley-Watkins (1-0), took the second rank and opened the season with a 40-0 shutout of Kimball. No. 3 Barnesville (1-0) edged No. 19-3A Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in its home-opener, while No. 4 Pillager (1-0) held Pelican Rapids scoreless in the second half of the Huskies' 36-14 win over the Vikings.
No. 5 Maple River (1-0) wore down Luverne in a 24-6 decision last Friday. Sixth-ranked Minneapolis North (1-0) bulldozed Class 4A Minneapolis South. Hawley, ranked seventh, found its offensive groove in a 60-28 barn-burner last Thursday.
No. 8 Royalton, No. 9 Triton and No. 10 Chatfield all picked up wins opening week to claim a spot in the poll.
Rushford-Peterson and Wabasso both earned 30 points, but the Trojans collected one more first-place vote to claim the top spot in the Class 1A poll. No. 1 Rushford Peterson (1-0) shutout Kingsland 58-0 last week. An extra point was all that pushed the second-ranked Rabbits (1-0) past Lac qui Parle Valley in 25-24 gridlock last Thursday.
Third-ranked Braham (1-0) was firing on all cylinders in its 55-0 shutout of Chisholm last week. No. 4 Murray County Central (1-0) decisively shut out Canby 27-0, scoring in just two quarters of that game. BOLD (1-0), ranked fifth, posted 30 first-half points in its 52-8 demolition of Paynesville.
No. 6 Mayer Lutheran, No. 7 Minneota, No. 8 Fillmore Central and No. 9 Goodhue all picked up their first wins last week, while No. 10 Red Lake County's 40-8 win over Cass-Lake Bena improves the Mustangs' record to 2-0.
Three-time 9-Man state champion, Grand Meadow (1-0), extended its win streak to 51 games following a 71-27 romping of Nicollet. The Superlarks were selected as runaway favorite, collecting five of the six first-place votes.
Second-ranked Wauban (1-0) churned out 347 rushing yards in its 52-8 victory over Northern Freeze. No. 3 Cromwell-Wright (1-0) sped past North Woods 37-8 in its home opener last Friday. Stephen-Argyle (1-0), ranked fourth, defeated Win-E-Mac 48-8 last week.
No. 5 Spring Grove (1-0) emerged victorious in a 52-51 overtime shootout with No. 7 Cleveland/Immanuel Lutheran (0-1).
Eighth-ranked Hills-Beaver Creek (1-0) routed Heron-Lake Okabena 46-0, while No. 9 Nevis (1-0) suffocated Kittson County Central 14-0 a week ago. No. 10 Hillcrest Lutheran was blown out by Rothsay 54-0 on the road.
