Thursday's prep football roundup: Centennial turns back White Bear Lake in OT

Centennial had to work a little overtime Thursday night.

Senior running back Sam Bonfe scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard run in overtime as the Cougars outlasted host White Bear Lake 27-21 in the season opener for both teams. Bonfe rushed for 125 yards on 18 carries.

White Bear Lake failed to score on its ensuing possession after scoring two late fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie it 21-21 and force overtime.

The Bears evened it on running back Zachary Griebel’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Blake Charles, followed by a two-point conversion pass from quarterback Daniel Lyons to Charles.

Lyons, who completed 22 of 30 passes for 221 yards, scored the Bears’ first two touchdowns, on runs of 5 and 6 yards.

In other opening night games:

Elk River 44, Moorhead 32: The Class 5A defending state champion Elks still have plenty of big-play offensive weapons. Adam Nelson and Mitchell Stroh each scored a second touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Elks rallied past Moorhead. The Spuds built a 10-point lead late in the third quarter before Elk River scored the final three touchdowns. Nelson’s 4-yard scoring run with 6 minutes, 28 seconds remaining gave the Elks the lead for good, 36-32. He opened the scoring with an 80-yard run. Stroh added an insurance touchdown with his second 4-yard scoring run with 1:38 left. Elk River’s other two scores came on Kevin Egbujor’s 40-yard run and Arik Nordenstrom’s 60-yard burst in the third quarter.

Minneapolis North 54, Minneapolis South 6: The Polars picked up right where they left off a year ago. The Class 1A defending state champions, who have moved up to Class 2A this year, rolled over the Tigers. Junior quarterback Armon Dalton threw four touchdown passes in the first half, when the Polars scored all 54 of their points. Dalton completed 11 of 15 passes for 180 yards.

Blaine 53, Stillwater 28: Senior quarterback Connor Melton took matters into his own hands for the Bengals. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 407 yards and five touchdowns and ran for an additional 57 yards and another score. Junior wide receiver Peyton Downey caught three passes for 180 yards, and two scores.

Lakeville North 62, Burnsville 0: Senior defensive backs Braden Walsh and Brendan Rehborg each returned interceptions for touchdowns as the Panthers overwhelmed the Blaze. Walsh led the defensive unit with 10 tackles. Teammate Brian Curtis Jr. ran for 120 yards on 15 carries and three scores.

Irondale 35, Spring Lake Park 0: Junior Parker Freiberg rushed for 156 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass, leading the Knights past the Panthers. Irondale senior quarterback Brendan White completed nine of 12 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Roseville 34, Anoka 16: Max Sandin scored two touchdowns and quarterback Luke Bouchart threw for two, leading the Raiders past the Tornadoes. Sandin scored on a 4-yard run and returned a punt 60 yards for another score. Bouchart threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Gary Smith and a 76-yarder to Jaeveon Mottley. Sandin and Mottley’s long touchdowns both came in the third quarter, extending Roseville’s slim halftime lead to 27-7.

Champlin Park 34, East Ridge 13: Senior running back Ernest Worjloh ran for three scores (20, 25 and 54 yards) and caught a 7-yard touchdown pass, leading the Rebels past the Raptors.

Holy Family 38, New London-Spicer 35: Sam Riegert scored his second touchdown on a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter as the Fire rallied to beat the Wildcats. Quarterback Jacob Zay threw two touchdown passes for Holy Family.

Maple Grove 28, Osseo 7: Senior Joe Raymon had two short scoring runs (2 and 3 yards) and an interception, leading the Crimson past the Orioles.

Spectrum 58, St. Paul Humboldt 26: The Hawks were no match for the Sting in their return to a varsity-level program. Humboldt played a junior-varsity schedule last season.
