After guiding Osseo to 74 victories in 11 seasons, Derrin Lamker can put one in his personal win column at Edina.

The seventh-ranked Hornets scored touchdowns on their first four possessions in Lamker’s first game as head coach Thursday en route to a season-opening 34-9 victory over Lakeville South at Kuhlman Stadium.

“It’s exciting not just to win but to see the kids play to their abilities,” Lamker said. “They know what they can do and we hope it can continue.”

The Hornets’ first three scores came from workhorse running back Matt Cavanagh. The junior capped off a game-opening 18-play drive with a one-yard plunge across the goal line. He scored on a three-yard run on Edina’s second drive and sliced down the middle of the Lakeville South defense from 12 yards out for touchdown No. 3.

Cavanagh, a starting safety for the Edina defense last season, finished with 202 yards on 41 carries.

"It’s a lot different this year. The O-line is the strength of our team and it’s always great to play behind them,” Cavanagh said. “I’m excited I get to play running back this year.”

Edina senior quarterback Ryan Meyer didn’t have to throw much in his first career start, but when he did he usually looked to fellow senior Anders Nelson, who made two third-down catches to keep early scoring drives alive. Nelson out-jumped Lakeville South’s defensive back for a two-yard score in the final seconds of the first half, putting Edina in front 27-3.

“You have to give Ryan a lot of credit. Nobody thought he was going to be a great quarterback and he stood in there and completed a high percentage of his passes,” Lamker said. “We were super happy with his poise in the pocket.”

Lakeville South drove the length of the field on its first drive, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by John Olson. On its first drive of the second half, Jeremiah Johnson sprinted into the end zone for an 11-yard Cougar touchdown.
