This fall marks the inaugural season of many newly formed districts that allow flexibility for teams to build a more competitive schedule.

The Metro district, which contains 27 of the state’s 32 Class 6A teams, was created after dissolving the East and West Metro districts from a season ago.

Defending big-school champion, Totino-Grace, opens the season at the University of St. Thomas against Cretin-Derham Hall on Aug. 31. St. Michael-Albertville, the 2015 Class 5A state champion, will make its Class 6A debut the same day at Mounds View.

Many of the metro’s Class 4A and Class 5A teams were placed into the Suburban district, but four big schools -- Coon Rapids, Robbinsdale Armstrong, Hopkins and Forest Lake -- will also join the district to promote program development.

Osseo, the 2015 Class 6A state champion, remains in the Metro district, but was reclassified by the MSHSL into Class 5A, Section 6, due to declining enrollment. The Orioles will face rival Maple Grove on Aug. 31 in their season-opener.

Section reclassification has shaken up some of the smaller classes as well.

Stewartville was bumped down to Class 3A where it’ll reside in Section 1 with longtime Hiawatha Valley League rival and defending Class 3A champion, Rochester Lourdes. The two Southeast district teams will meet in their penultimate regular season game on Oct. 13 after a 29-28 decision in favor of the Eagles last fall.
