The Centennial football program will honor nine players bound for college programs. The group will be recognized at a ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the school gym.

Those being honored: Deante Book (Bemidji State), Sam Byrd (South Dakota), Luke Chuol (South Dakota), Kyle Nordby (Wyoming), Jake Steiner (Concordia Moorhead), Keshaun Story (Bemidji State), Jason Thorud (North Dakota State College of Science), Riley Trettel (Chicago) and Cameron Whitney (Central Lakes College, Brainerd).

Just Drive Day

The second annual Just Drive Day will take place April 29 in Monticello, an event to create awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Monticello boys’ cross-country coach Dave Wik helped create the event. His former runner, Phillip LaVallee, was killed by a distracted driver in 2013.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants will depart from Monticello Middle School to walk, jog or bike a loop through town to promote safe driving. April is national Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

LaVallee earned all-state honors as a senior, then ran for South Dakota State as a freshman. He was running when struck from behind by a van that crossed both lanes.

The event will include free food, beverages and giveaways. Participants are encouraged to wear orange.
