The 17-year veteran with the Hornets, acknowledging that coaching is “now a 12-month job,'' cited a desire to watch his son play football in college.

Edina football coach Reed Boltmann announced his resignation Thursday morning after eight seasons as head coach and 17 years on the Edina football staff.

Boltmann cited a desire to watch his son Brock, who will be a freshman quarterback at the University of North Dakota in 2017. Boltmann compiled 40-39 overall record in his time at Edina and led the Hornets to a berth in the 2012 Class 6A tournament.

“There are many responsibilities and pressures tied to a head coaching position. It is now a 12-month job,’’ Boltmann said in his resignation statement. “Now that Brock will be playing in college, I want to be able watch him play without feeling guilty. The time commitment this position takes would not allow me to enjoy any of his games because I would always be thinking of what I need to get done.”

Boltmann is a native of Hamburg, Minn., and graduated from Mayer Lutheran High School in 1983. He played college football at Augsburg College and later joined the coaching staff before his time at Edina, where he will remain as a physical education teacher.

With one of the metro’s best quarterbacks in Brock Boltmann, Edina was expected to be among the top teams in Class 6A this past season. But a rash of injuries took a toll. The Hornets finished 5-5, losing to Maple Grove in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Former Osseo coach Derrin Lamker, who guided the Orioles to the 2015 Class 6A state championship before stepping down and becoming the offensive coordinator at Edina, is believed to be a strong candidate for the vacated head coaching position.
