It didn’t take long for Centennial’s linemen on both sides of the ball to establish themselves against Wayzata.

In the opening three minutes of the Class 6A playoff game Friday, the Cougars defense sacked Trojans quarterback Keaton Heide to force a punt. Then it was the offensive line’s turn, opening a big hole for running back Riley Trettel, who followed his blockers and raced 85 yards for a touchdown.

Those sequences set a tone as Centennial, playing at home, controlled action up front en route to a 39-14 victory over the Trojans (2-7) in the first-round game.

“I had some great blocks from the [offensive] line,” said Trettel, who ran for a game-high 170 yards.

Late in the first quarter, Centennial’s defensive line hit Heide as he was throwing. The ball was intercepted by defensive lineman Jason Thorud and returned for a touchdown.

Centennial (5-4) also benefited from strong performances by the senior trio of Deante Book, Kyle Nordby and Keshaun Story. Book, a running back, rushed for a touchdown and also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nordby. Centennial’s special teams blockers paved the way for Story, who returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown.

“From the beginning of the game I know we were coming off the ball hard,” Trettel said of Centennial’s linemen. “That’s what we said we had to do in practice to beat this team.”
