Rogers remains a dominant program but relinguished its grip on league supremicy to rival St. Michael-Albertville. The Royals look to reclaim their position when hosting the Knights in a battle of unbeatens Friday. Photo by Kelly McGinley, SportsEngine
Before the debut of district play two seasons ago, the Rogers football program was a dynasty in the Mississippi 8 Conference for the better part of 10 years. The Royals won six straight league titles (2009-14) before being unseated in their first year as a member of the North Central District Blue Division.
It seemed destined that the team to knock off Rogers would be rival St. Michael-Albertville. The Knights earned a share of the final Mississippi 8 title two years ago and handed the Royals their lone league loss last season in a 26-7 game.
That rivalry only intensified when St. Michael-Albertville ended Rogers’ season with a 28-21 win in the Class 5A, Section 6 title game en route to its state title.
If the division is to be a two-team race again, then this may be the most important game on the schedule. It makes this matchup between two league favorites and rivals is a no-brainer for this week's Top Game of the Week.
