Defensive Player of the Week Candidates:

Reece Winkelman, Marshall LB, senior: The South Dakota State commit made a large impact in a short amount of time as he racked up two interceptions, two tackles for loss and a sack in the first half of a 63-14 win over Jordan. He also had two receiving touchdowns on offense.

Ray Motley, Rochester Mayo LB, senior: The Mayo defense was highly disruptive in 29-16 win over Faribault in Week 1, finishing with six sacks as a team. Motley led the team with two sacks to go along with 11 tackles and three tackles for loss.

Parker Johnson, Rockford LB, senior (Winner): Johnson led all players with 19 total tackles (11 solo) in a 14-6 win over Watertown-Mayer. Johnson added a pass deflection, a forced fumble and three tackles for loss in the defensive battle.

Max Bautch, Blaine LB, senior: Bautch racked up eight solo tackles and two sacks as Blaine knocked off traditional power Wayzata 33-21. The senior holds a D1 offer from North Dakota State.

Nate Wheeler, Minneapolis North DT, senior: Wheeler wreaked havoc in a 22-15 win over crosstown rival Minneapolis Washburn, recording 11 tackles, 1.5 sacks and four tackles for loss. Wheeler played an integral role on a Polar team that reached the Class 1A state championship game last season, finishing the year with a team-leading 11 sacks.

Marcus Hosea, Apple Valley DB, senior: The Apple Valley defense opened some eyes in a 37-3 blowout win over Forest Lake and Hosea led the way. The senior recorded both Apple Valley interceptions and returned one for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Payton Schiefelbein, Kimball LB, junior: Schiefelbein led all players with 16 total tackles (11 solo) in a Week 1 loss to Maple Lake. Four of his tackles were for a loss and he also recorded a pass defended.

Spencer Mortensen, Renville County West DE, senior: The 6-foot-5 Mortensen caused trouble off the edge, recording eight tackles and two sacks in a 13-6 win over Underwood. Mortensen also caught three passes for 71 yards and a touchdown on offense.

Steph Olson Jr., Burnsville DB, senior: Olson did a little bit of everything in a 20-14 win over upset-minded Roseville. The senior made four tackles, intercepted two passes, led the team in rushing yards and scored two of the three Blaze touchdowns. He also returned three punts for 57 yards.

Nick Bloom, Edina LB, junior: Bloom was everywhere for the Hornets in a 23-14 win over Andover, leading all players with 16 tackles against a tough Huskies offense.
