DeLaSalle has named C.J. Hallman, a school alum and assistant coach for eight years with the school’s football and boys’ basketball teams, as its new head football coach.

Hallman, most recently the Islanders’ offensive line coach, replaces Sean McMenomy, who stepped down in March after seven seasons as head coach.

Hallman played on the Islander team that won the Class 3A football state title in 1999. The program had 13 consecutive winning seasons before finishing with a 3-7 record in 2015. While Hallman was assistant, the Islanders reached state championship games in 2008 and 2014.

Hallman graduated from DeLaSalle in 2002 and attended DePaul University, where he earned a sociology degree in 2007. He returned to DeLaSalle in 2008 and has worked as associate director of Lasallian Ministry, a student Christian service program.

The school, located on Nicollet Island in downtown Minneapolis, said Monday that Hallman “quickly stood out’’ from the applications of several dozen candidates.

Hallman “has earned the support of athletes, their families and many colleagues, and almost all of his supporters spoke to both the athletic and personal excellence he would instill in his players,” Adam Pribyl, DeLaSalle director of student activities, said in a statement.

McMenomy has accepted the head coaching position at South Caldwell High School in Hudson, N.C. McMenomy, a former University of Minnesota defensive back, compiled a 62-18 record in seven seasons at DeLaSalle.
