West metro notebook: 20 area players picked for last all-star football game in St. Cloud

In all, 88 Minnesota seniors were divided into two teams representing the North and the South.

Damario Armstrong and Prince Kruah, key players in Osseo’s run to the Class 6A football state championship last fall, head up 20 west metro athletes chosen to play in the 43rd Annual Minnesota Football Coaches Association Tackle Cancer All-Star Football Game.

It will showcase 88 Minnesota seniors divided into two teams representing the North and the South. The game will be June 25 at Husky Stadium at St. Cloud State University.

The North team features 11 west metro players. In addition to Armstrong and Kruah, there are Chance Bowen, Armstrong; Cory Dixon, Minneapolis Henry; Isaiah Matthews, Minneapolis North; David McCuskey, Orono; Mile Oloun, Breck; Andrew Piehl, Rogers; Adam Treptau, Buffalo, and Elijah Rice and Isaiah Weston of Class 5A state champion St. Michael-Albertville. The head coach of the North is Rocori’s Mike Rowe.

There are nine west metro players on the South roster: Dylan Drone and Mannie Kugmeh; Hopkins; Devan Hunt, Edina; Joel Koenecke, Delano; Peter Redmond, Minnetonka; Elerson Smith, Minneapolis South; Broderic Thompson, Hutchinson; and Tristan Weber, Glencoe-Silver Lake. Prior Lake’s Matt Geigenheimer is head coach.

Beginning in late 2016, the all-star game will be held at U.S. Bank Stadium after the completion of the high school season. The date for the game has yet to be determined.

Preseason power

The top three teams in the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A rankings are west metro teams. Chanhassen, the 2015 Class 3A champs, is ranked No. 1, with Eden Prairie ranked No. 2 and Minnetonka No. 3.

Top-ranked west metro teams in Class 3A are No. 8 Holy Angels, No. 9 Hutchinson and No. 10 Waconia. In 2A, Minnehaha Academy is ranked No. 2 and Holy Family is No. 3.
