Defensive Player of the Week: Week 1

Defensive Player of the Week Candidates:

Charlie Gamer, Breck LB, senior (winner): Gamer recorded 14 solo tackles and 19 total tackles in a 27-6 loss to Providence Academy. He also forced a fumble and had a tackle for loss. 

Adam Johnson, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City LB, junior: Johnson recorded a staggering 21 tackles in a 28-22 win over Belgrade-Brooten Elrosa. He also had a sack in the game.

Zachary Jakes, Mankato West DL, sophomore: The Mankato West Scarlets rode their offense to the Class 5A championship last season but it was their defense, led by Zachary Jakes, that stepped up in week 1. Jakes recorded 11 tackles, three sacks, and a blocked extra point in a 28-6 win over Owatonna.   

Jaxson Turner, Esko DB, senior: Turner did just about everything possible to help his team win in week 1. He had 115 total yards and two touchdowns on offense, but made a bigger impact on defense where he had three tackles and intercepted two passes, including one for a touchdown. 

Riley Kirk, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton DE, senior: Kirk stuffed the stat sheet in a 43-12 victory over Sleepy Eye. The senior recorded 17 tackles, two sacks, and seven tackles for loss. He also ran for two touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. 

Brendan Parson, North Woods DB, sophomore: The North Woods defense came up with three interceptions in a 28-7 week 1 win over Cook County, and Parson had two of them. The sophomore also made seven tackles for the Grizzlies. 

Evan Ronsen, St. Michael-Albertville LB, senior: Perennial Class 5A contender St. Michael-Albertville came up short in a loss to Moorhead but Ronsen still managed to stand out. He had a game-high 13 tackles and recorded 1.5 sacks. 

Christian Thomas, Wayzata DL, senior: Thomas was a disruptive force in a 42-23 win over Blaine in week 1. He made nine tackles, one for a loss, and came up with two sacks. 

Graham Devore, Mahtomedi DL, junior: Devore recorded 10 tackles and two sacks for the Zephyrs as they fell to St. Thomas Academy 19-0. 

Haydon Miller, Zimmerman LB, junior: Along with his four tackles, Miller accounted for three of Zimmerman's four sacks in a 42-28 win over Delano. He also ran for 108 yards and a TD on offense.
