Woodbury tops Eastview on TD pass on last play

• WOODBURY 23, EASTVIEW 21: Jeremiah Coddon hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Brady Mundahl on the last play of the game to rally the Royals past the Lightning in the season opener for both teams Saturday. Mundahl passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

• RED WING 20, NORTHFIELD 15: Tait Kelly’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Kipp Adams with five seconds left capped off a nine-play, 97-yard game-winning drive.

• ROSEMOUNT 16, WHITE BEAR LAKE 13: Jared Hanson connected with running back Blake Storholm on a 51-yard touchdown pass to give the Irish the comeback victory. The Irish defense shut out the Bears in the second half and blocked a punt that resulted in a safety.

• ST. FRANCIS 24, BEMIDJI 14: Max Greene rushed for two touchdowns to help the Saints beat the Lumberjacks in a rematch of last year’s Class 5A, Section 7 championship game.

• MOORHEAD 26, ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE 16: The Spuds forced nine turnovers — including Malique Delbrune’s 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter — to help Moorhead hang on and beat the Knights. Quarterback Matt Bye ran for a 95-yard touchdown and connected with Hunter Brandt on a 13-yard TD pass.

• SPRING LAKE PARK 28, CHASKA 21: Quarterback Zachary Ojille rushed for 200 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns to help the Panthers down the Hawks.

• MOUND-WESTONKA 29, ST. ANTHONY 0: Isaiah Cherrier rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns to help the White Hawks cruise past the Huskies. Cherrier also intercepted a pass.

• MONTEVIDEO 27, HOWARD LAKE-WAVERLY-WINSTED 21: The Thunderhawks trailed 21-6 at halftime but scored the final 21 points of the game to surge past the Lakers. Quarterback Sam Gatz rushed for three touchdowns in the first half to give the Lakers the early lead, but Troy Diggins rallied the Thunderhawks with two touchdown passes in the second half.

• ELK RIVER 51, BRAINERD 28: The Elks rushed for 565 yards and seven touchdowns in breezing past the Warriors. Nick Rice rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns and Kyle Ziemer for 121 yards and one score. Sam Gibas added 103 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

• BECKER 41, HUTCHINSON 14: The Bulldogs opened up 27-0 lead before halftime and rolled to a victory over Hutch. The Becker defense limited the Tigers to one first down in the opening half.

• MINNETONKA 8, CHAMPLIN PARK 6: Marshall Glodoski rushed for a 44-yard touchdown to help power the Skippers past the Rebels. Chad Costello hit Eldrige Joyce for a 20-yard touchdown pass to pull the Rebels within two points in the fourth quarter. But the rally fell short when Costello’s pass to Joyce on a two-point conversion was incomplete.

• TARTAN 22, HILL-MURRAY 13: Quarterback Ben Engwer rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to lift the Titans over the Pioneers. Running back Damari Wilson added 104 yards on 13 carries. Felipe Ybarra-Suggs returned a fumble 54 yards for the Pioneers’ first touchdown.

• SOUTH ST. PAUL 35, NORTH ST. PAUL 14: The Packers cruised to the victory, outgaining the Polars 387 yards to 77. Nathan Gobely led the Packers with 145 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Quarterback Dan Pietruzewski rushed for 66 yards and three touchdowns for South St. Paul.

Delays, schedule changes

Storms created a mess for the opening slate of prep football games Saturday. At least two games were called early and deemed final.

At Cooper in New Hope, the game was called in the third quarter with Cooper leading Bloomington Jefferson 40-0. At Mounds View, the Mustangs led Farmington 28-7 when the game was called with 2:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Three games were rescheduled for Monday, including one underway. A 4 p.m. game between Brooklyn Center and host Fridley was halted in the second quarter with Fridley leading 13-0. It will resume at 6 p.m. Monday at Fridley.

A game between Breck and Providence Academy was rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Plymouth-based Providence Academy. The New Life Academy versus St. Croix Lutheran game will be played at 4:30 p.m. Monday on the Crusaders’ field.

Many other games across the metro and state were delayed by lightning Saturday evening. Heading into Saturday, storm fears had already prompted about a third of Saturday’s games to be moved to earlier in the afternoon.
