Ray Betton is ready for yet another challenge in his ever-changing life.

Betton was recently named the new coach of Shakopee’s football program. He comes to the Sabers after serving as Holy Angels’ coach the past five seasons.

Betton replaces Jody Stone, who resigned in November after nine years as the program’s coach. Stone accumulated a 36-46 career record, which included back-to-back Missota Conference championships in 2010 and 2011.

The Sabers just completed their first season in a much stronger South Suburban Conference. They finished with an overall mark of 2-7.

Betton led the Stars to back-to-back state tournament appearances in 2013 and 2014. They lost to Hutchinson 49-7 in the Class 4A finals of the Prep Bowl in 2013. He had a 35-19 overall record during his five-year tenure at Holy Angels.

He also coached at Simley for four years, compiling a 24-16 overall record. Betton led the Spartans to two Classic Suburban Conference crowns.

Betton served at East Ridge’s initial coach for one season between his stints at Simley and Holy Angels. He guided the Raptors when the Woodbury school opened in 2009.

Junior hits milestone

Luke Harris, a junior forward on the Northfield boys’ basketball team, recently eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for his career. He reached the milestone with a 16-point effort in an 80-63 victory over Rochester Mayo in a Big 9 Conference matchup.

The 6-foot-9 Harris is just the eighth player in the history of the boys’ basketball program to reach the milestone. The career scoring mark of 1,488 points is held by Zach Filzen.

Harris is averaging nearly 20 points per game for the Raiders (12-4). He scored a career-best 38 points against Winona earlier this season.

Top performances

• Simley junior Michael Modica won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle with record-setting performances in the Class 1A True Team boys’ swimming meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Modica won the 200 with a time of 1 minute, 43.96 seconds and 500 with a time of 4 minutes, 48.98 seconds. He is undefeated in both events this season.

• Burnsville/Shakopee sophomore Jack Lindsay was the boys’ medalist in the 22-team Alpine skiing Buck Hill Invitational this past Friday in Burnsville. He accumulated a time of 44.73 seconds on his two runs down the hill.
