A look at the first-team offense

(Editor’s note:  The Star Tribune’s All-Metro teams and Metro Player of the Year were chosen based on nominations from metro-area coaches, conversations with a panel of coaches and staff observations.)

QUARTERBACK

Jackson Erdmann, Rosemount, 6-4, 205

Two-time South Suburban Conference player of the year. Passed for 2,044 yards, 24 touchdowns, just four interceptions. Is 25-5 as a starter, owns school records for passing yards and touchdown passes.

RUNNING BACKS

Kez Flomo, Totino-Grace, 5-10, 205

Downhill runner punishes defenders yet has the quickness to bounce outside and outrun people. Rushed for 1,698 yards and 19 touchdowns. Fumbled just once in 256 carries.

Robbie Grimsley, Hutchinson, 6-0, 187

Speed to burn (4.5 40-yard dash) and strong enough to break arm tackles. Finished with 1,668 rushing yards and 33 touchdown on just 155 carries. Headed to North Dakota St. as a defensive back.

Will Rains, Eden Prairie, 5-11, 215

Became the key cog in an Eagles’ offense that is based on a relentless running game. Runs with strength but adds tremendous balance and speed to out-run defenders.

RECEIVERS

Marquise Bridges, DeLaSalle, WR, 6-1, 175

Slippery and quick, a master at getting yards after the catch. Going into the Class 4A semifinals, he had 66 catches for 1,317 yards and 21 touchdowns. Committed to North Dakota St.

Brooks Carroll, Stillwater, WR, 5-9, 175

At a combine last summer, Carroll timed out as the metro’s fastest player. Caught 31 passes for 669 yards, 9 touchdowns. Scored 12 touchdowns overall, averaging 46 yards per score.

Ryan Kaczynski, Mounds View, TE, 6-4, 196

Long and athletic, he stretched the field for the Mustangs, catching 24 passes for 427 yards and 10 TDs. Automatic near the goal line. Basketball player agility at a rugged position.

LINEMEN

Bronson Dovich, Chaska, 6-5, 283

Agility, ablity to dish out punishing blows and hands that can immobilze defensive linemen proved attractive to the Minnesota recruiters. Committed to the Gophers in May.

Ben Shoults, Maple Grove, 6-4, 275

Intelligent (33 ACT score) with exceptional football IQ. Committed to Harvard. Understands angles, can play a finesse game, but prefers to line up and outhit the opponent.

Sawyer Witt, Hutchinson, 6-2, 284

Throwback-type lineman who likes nothing more than blowing up opponents. Had 72 pancake blocks. Coach Andy Rostberg calls him “the best lineman we’ve ever had.”

Patric Rooney, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, 6-3, 265

Metro West Conference offensive lineman of the year. Stands out in the running game. Controls defensive linemen and can still get out and handle a linebacker. Committed to North Dakota.

Joey Schons, Prior Lake, 6-3, 290

Runs the show from center. Three-year starter, two-time South Suburban Conference selection. Headed a line that allowed the Lakers to gain more than 5,000 rushing yards over the last two seasons.

ATHLETE

Dimitri Williams, Rosemount, 5-11, 180

Unique ability to reach top speed quickly, yet still change directions. Scored 23 touchdowns: 16 rushing, 5 receiving, 1 interception return, 1 kickoff return. Accounted for 1,351 all-purpose yards.
