Drayton Carlberg, a three-star recruit who missed a large portion of the season because of a high-ankle sprain, has six schools on his list.

The sudden onslaught of winter Monday prompted DeLaSalle to cut short its school day and send students home early. That change forced two-way lineman Drayton Carlberg to postpone his plans to announce his college choice that day.

The 6-5, 281-pound Carlberg, a three-star recruit who missed a large portion of the season because of a high-ankle sprain, has six schools on his list of finalists: Minnesota, California, Michigan St., North Carolina, Oregon and Vanderbilt. He now plans to disclose his choice Friday.

Many of the national recruiting sites have reported that Carlberg is leaning toward Oregon, but he has given no clear public indication.

Carlberg was selected to play in the U.S. Marine Corps’ Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Carson, Calif., on Jan. 4.

Future teammates face off

North Dakota State football fans will be taking special interest in the Class 4A football semifinal Saturday between DeLaSalle and top-ranked Hutchinson.

The game, scheduled for 11 a.m. at Wayzata, features two of NDSU’s top recruits: Hutchinson running back/defensive back Robbie Grimsley and DeLaSalle wide receiver Marquise Bridges.

Grimsley, a 6-foot, 180-pounder with 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, has rushed for more than 1,600 yards and scored 30 touchdowns this season. He has been recruited as a defensive back.

The elusive Bridges, whose physical size and speed is nearly identical to that of Grimsley, has 66 receptions for 1,317 yards and 21 receiving touchdowns.

Odds and ends

•  Eden Prairie finished third in the Class 3A volleyball tournament with a three-set victory over Roseville. The Eagles’ Abby Ihrke and Elizabeth Mohr were named to the all-tournament team.

• If its first two games are an accurate indicator, the fortunes of the Hopkins girls’ hockey team will hinge primarily on its offense. The Royals routed North Metro 10-0 in their opener, getting a hat trick from Grace Bizal and two goals apiece from Rachael St. Clair and Kylie Hanley. Two days later, however, the Royals’ offense was stymied by Champlin Park goalie Hannah Goettl, who stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 6-1 Rebels’ victory. Bizal scored Hopkins’ only goal.

•  Despite outshooting their opponent 37-10, Wayzata needed a goal by Ally Wiitala with under six minutes left in the game to tie Anoka 1-1 in the Trojans’ season opener. They had a bit more success in Saturday’s victory at Coon Rapids, scoring five goals on 43 shots, including a hat trick from senior forward Sophia Shaver.
