The Royals had to vacate their season-opening victory over Superior, Wis., due to an administrative mistake.

The Hopkins football team has vacated its season-opening victory over Superior, Wis., due to an administrative mistake.

A player was erroneously declared ineligible by the school after having played in the Royals 37-14 victory over Superior on Aug. 22. He sat out the following two games while the error was being corrected and has since returned to the team.

“It wasn’t the fault of the player, the coach or anyone involved with the football team,” Hopkins’ Athletic Director Dan Johnson said. “[The mistake] was discovered, corrected and he’s been reinstated.”

The vacated victory officially drops Hopkins’ record to 4-4 on the season but has no other effect on the team. The Royals, who nearly rallied to be No. 1, 6A Eden Prairie Wednesday, earned the third-seed in Section 6, 6A. They will host Edina in their first playoff game on Friday, Oct. 24.
