The biggest new thing about Minnesota high school football in 2014 won’t be felt until the cold of November.

Teams that reach the semifinals in each of the seven classes, accustomed to moving indoors to play in the climate-controlled Metrodome, instead will play the games outside at neutral sites in mid-November. Class 6A games will be at Edina and Osseo. Locations for the other six classes include Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Osseo, Wayzata and St. Cloud State.

For the first time in 33 years, the Prep Bowl also will be played outside, at TCF Bank Stadium. The games will be played Nov. 21-22, a week earlier than their usual slot on the weekend after Thanksgiving.

The Prep Bowl also will be hosted by TCF Bank Stadium in 2015 before moving to the new Vikings stadium in 2016.

Also next fall, football conferences will dissolve and give way to districts. Districts consisting of 12 to 28 schools will each create a committee to handle scheduling. The plan does not change the makeup of sections used in football playoffs.
