Holy Angels to play in Tri-Metro Conference next season

The move puts the school in a big conference of mostly private schools that also will be joined next year by Fridley and Columbia Heights.

Holy Angels will join the Tri-Metro Conference in the 2014-15 season, the Minnesota State High School League has determined.

Holy Angels, based in Richfield, is playing this season in the Missota Conference, which is dissolving after the announced departure of four of its member schools last year.

Other teams in the Tri-Metro include St. Croix Lutheran, St. Anthony, Concordia Academy, St. Agnes, Brooklyn Center, DeLaSalle, Providence Academy, Minnehaha Academy, Blake, Breck and St. Paul Academy, Mounds Park and Visitation. They will be joined by Fridley and Columbia Heights, which were cast adrift by the dissolution of the North Suburban Conference.

The league also recently placed Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the new Metro West Conference next season. The Red Knights compete in most sports this season in the North Suburban.

The Benilde-St. Margaret’s placement came after its bid to join the Metro West had been rejected by member schools, whose athletic directors met Wednesday to discuss the situation. A decision on whether to appeal, which must be made within 10 days, is expected to come from the schools’ principals next week.

One other metro-area private school – St. Thomas Academy – is awaiting placement. The school had been asked to leave the Classic Suburban Conference, which subsequently voted to dissolve.

All of the conference changes are driven primarily by a desire for more evenly matched competition.
