Nine standout football players from the Northwest Suburban Conference will participate in the 40th Annual Minnesota Football Coaches Association High School All-Star Game.

The game takes place at 1 p.m. June 29 at Husky Stadium on the St. Cloud State University campus.

Leading the way is Osseo’s Bridgeport Tusler, a running back/defensive back who served as the Orioles’ heart and soul and earned virtually every major individual postseason award. Tusler rushed for 1,173 yards and 16 touchdowns. He caught 18 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns. He added four additional touchdowns through passing (one), punt returns (two) and on one of his eight interceptions.

Tusler will be joined by linebacker and former Osseo teammate Troy Kray and future South Dakota State teammate and roommate Jake Wieneke. Physically dominant, the Maple Grove wide receiver used his size (6-4, 210 pounds), terrific hands, body control and surprising speed to catch 53 passes for 1,130 yards and 13 TDs — scoring one in every game in which he played.

Class 5A champion Totino-Grace counts more participants (three) than any team: Dartmouth recruit Charlie Miller, linebacker Kurt Mattox and offensive lineman John Bednarczyk. All three played large roles in Totino-Grace’s title run. Miller, a wide receiver/defensive back, was the latest in a long line of smart and fast Eagles’ players who could make big plays at various positions. Mattox called the defense on the field and ranks among the Eagles’ unofficial all-time leaders in hours spent dissecting game film. Bednarczyk, a punishing blocker, earned Star Tribune first-team All-Metro honors.

The additional Northwest Suburban Conference representatives are Blaine defensive back Joe Robel, Centennial running back Michael Diggins and Andrew Ziegler, linebacker, of Champlin Park.

Two other players from the north metro, Spring Lake Park’s Daulton Olinger and Mounds View’s Mick Nelson (a Western Illinois recruit) will also be on the field. Olinger, playing defensive tackle, was named North Suburban Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He posted 70 tackles and eight sacks.
