The coaches for the 2013 Minnesota High School All-Star football game have been selected.

Becker coach Dwight Lundeen will coach the North team, while Hutchinson’s Andy Rostburg will head the South. The rosters for the teams will be announced this week.

The All-Star game will be played June 29 at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium. Teams will practice together at St. John’s University in the week leading up to the game.

Hornets hitting birdies

Edina’s badminton program, in just its third year in existence, shone Friday when it played host to the second annual Edina Invitational. As expected, defending state champion St. Paul Johnson won the tournament and St. Paul Highland Park finished second. But Edina finished tied for third, with St. Paul Central outpointing perennial contender St. Paul Harding, which finished fifth.

Leading the way for the Hornets was the doubles team of seniors Eliza Thompson and Jane Bo, who won the No. 1 doubles flight, beating Johnson’s Coua Lee and Jenny Vang 21-19, 21-18 in the championship match.

Woodward leads all

Speaking of Edina, senior guard Graham Woodward put an exclamation point on his high school basketball career by leading the Hornets to a third-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament. It was Edina’s best finish since winning three consecutive state championships from 1966 through 1968.

Woodward, who will play at Penn State next year, was the leading scorer in the tournament with 86 points in three games.

Spring rescheduling

The end of the winter sports season usually means a chance for high school athletic departments to catch their breath, but the colder-than-normal weather has meant added work for athletic directors.

At Hopkins, athletic director Dan Johnson said he and his staff are using most of their spare time trying to plan for the baseball and softball seasons, knowing that ball field conditions are expected to be unplayable until at least the second week in April.

“And that’s if we get a week of nice weather,” Johnson said. “The big problem is the cycle of thawing during the day and refreezing at night. It turns the fields to mush.”

Already Hopkins has rescheduled its season opener with Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Originally a home game on April 6, the game was moved up to April 5 because Hopkins was able to reserve space at the Metrodome.

The caveat? The game is scheduled for 6:45 a.m.

“We can’t schedule late, because they’re high school kids, but a lot of our kids are on buses by that time anyway,” Johnson said.
