Osseo's Tusler is AP Player of the Year

Osseo running back Bridgeport Tusler has been selected as the Associated Press Minnesota Player of the Year for high school football. The award and the AP's all-state team were announced Tuesday.

Tusler, who also was the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year, rushed for 1,173 yards and 16 touchdowns and accounted for 23 TDs, passing, receiving and returning. He also led all teams in the Twin Cities metro area with eight interceptions.

North Dakota, Northern Iowa and South Dakota have shown interest in Tusler, as has Rutgers. Tusler has indicated a desire to play at Minnesota but has yet to receive an offer from the Gophers.

BOYS' HOCKEY

Hurley, Edina down Lakeville South

• EDINA 6, LAKEVILLE SOUTH 1: Junior forward Connor Hurley had a hat trick -- two of his goals in the first period -- as Edina improved to 3-0. Dylan Malmquist, Tim Spicola and Andy Jordahl also scored for the Hornets, while goalie Willie Benjamin stopped 16 of 17 shots.

• WAYZATA 3, ROSEMOUNT 2: A power-play goal at 3:21 of the third period by Matthew Freytag -- his second goal of the game -- broke a 2-2 tied and lifted the visiting Trojans to the victory. Ted Schultz had a goal and an assist for Rosemount.

• MINNETONKA 7, APPLE VALLEY 1: Seven different players scored goals for No. 4, Class 2A Minnetonka. John Schuldt and Max Coatta each had three assists to go with their goals, and defenseman Jimmy Schuldt had four assists. Apple Valley goalie Shane Van Dusartz had a busy evening, making 40 saves.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Jefferson holds on to beat Minnetonka

• BLOOMINGTON JEFFERSON 64, MINNETONKA 57: The play of senior guards Brooke Fritzlar and Katie Schuster, who scored 12 points each, complemented junior center Allison Reimersma's 14-point effort as the Jaguars held off Minnetonka. Skippers guard Joanna Hedstrom led all scorers with 19 points and freshman forward Courtney Fredrickson had 17.

• EDEN PRAIRIE 55, PRIOR LAKE 25: The Eagles opened the season with a convincing victory, outscoring the Lakers 34-13 after halftime. Sophomore center Samantha Trammel scored 15 points and sophomore forward Martha Kuderer chipped in with 10 for Eden Prairie.

• COLUMBIA HEIGHTS 40, MINNEAPOLIS EDISON 39: Rashonna Thomas hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to complete a comeback for the Hylanders. Thomas led Columbia Heights, which trailed 23-18 at halftime, with 13 points.

• CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI 58, PRINCETON 42: Guard Brynn Liljander stole the show for the Bluejackets, scoring a career-high 33 points as Cambridge-Isanti raced out to a 16-point halftime lead and coasted to victory.

GIRLS' HOCKEY

Schammel lifts Red Wing over Totino-Grace

• RED WING 6, TOTINO-GRACE 2: Big nights are no longer a big deal for Red Wing's high-scoring forward Nicole Schammel. She scored two goals and added three assists for her third five-point game of the season as the Wingers improved to 7-0. Schammel has 30 points -- 15 goals, 15 assists-- in those seven games.

• MOUNDS VIEW 4, PARK OF COTTAGE GROVE 3, OT: Lauren Klein's unassisted goal at 2:15 over overtime gave Mounds View its fourth consecutive victory. The Mustangs tied the score 3-3 on Kathryn Larson's third-period goal.

• SPRING LAKE PARK/ST. ANTHONY 5, SIMLEY 0: Goalie Mackensay Kelly bounced back from a rough start to the season, stopping all 23 shots she faced to earn her first shutout of 2012-23 and fifth of her career.
