DeLaSalle's McMenomy: 'We'll be back'

By JIM PAULSEN, Star Tribune

After nearly everyone had left the Hopkins High School football field Friday following No. 1 DeLaSalle's shocking 21-14 loss to Becker in the Class 4A quarterfinals, Islanders coach Sean McMenomy sat on the turf, leaning back, legs crossed, trying to make sense of what just happened.

"We made a whole year's worth of mistakes in one game," McMenomy reflected, more baffled than angry by the outcome. "Every play, we had a different breakdown. I mean, put our rosters side-by-side and we have more talent. But that's high school football. They beat us."

The usually upbeat McMenomy shook his head, then, standing up, smiled at the prospect of next year.

"We'll be back," he said. "We've got pretty much our whole offense coming back. That will be fun."

Swimmers from the west metro will get the chance to defend their state titles at the girls' swimming and diving state meet, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

In Class 2A, Chanhassen sophomore Kaia Grobe has a strong chance to be a double-winner again in the 50 and 100 freestyles. She has the top qualifying time the 100 and the second-best qualifying time in the 50.

Also seeking another title will be Eden Prairie's Kira Zubar in the 500 freestyle, Wayzata'sEmma Paulson in the 100 backstroke and Edina's Olivia Anderson in the 100 breaststroke.

Trojans win another title

The Wayzata girls' cross-country didn't rest on its laurels after winning the Class 2A team championship on Nov. 3.

Fresh off of their victory, the Trojans traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D., for Sunday's Nike Cross Regionals cross-country race.

The team of Anna French, Annika Halverson, Michaela Keller-Miller, Annika Lerdall, Mary Franke, MacKenzie Keller-Miller and McKenna Evans took first place in the Heartland Region Girls' Championship race and now will compete in the Nike Cross Nationals race in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 2.

Eagan, which finished second in the state meet, was runner-up to Wayzata again, taking second place and also qualifying for the national race. It marks the first time in race history that two Minnesota teams will be racing for the national championship.
