Despite program-best season, Biezuns unexpectedly departs

Coming off one of the program’s best seasons in school history, Minneapolis Southwest football coach John Biezuns has resigned as coach.

“I’ve officially resigned from coaching at Southwest,” Biezuns said Monday. “It’s a personal matter.”

Despite nearly dethroning Washburn as 10-time City Conference champions and leading the team to its first playoff win since 1990, the Lakers coach is leaving behind an improving program and said he doesn’t know if he will pursue other coaching opportunities in the future.

Southwest athletic director Ryan Lamberty had no comment on Biezuns’ unexpected departure and referred all questions to the Minneapolis School District. Messages left at the district were not returned Monday evening.

Throughout the successful 8-2 season (5-1 City Conference), opposing coaches complained about what they regarded as unsportsmanlike conduct from Lakers players and coaching staff. The reoccurring problem was addressed at the City Conference coaches’ postseason meeting.

The Lakers were 20-9 with a share of the 2010 conference title in three seasons under Biezuns. He will retain his job as an elementary teacher within the Minneapolis Public Schools.
