Wayzata statement: No points for Eden Prairie

The Trojans shut out the Eagles, handing the defending champions a second consecutive loss.

There was no conference title to be won, no undefeated records to be protected. Neither team was likely to alter its section seeding drastically, either.

All that was left for the state’s two premier big-school powers before heading into the first-ever Class 6A playoffs next week was to make one final statement.

And, boy, did Wayzata ever make one.

Wayzata scored with offense, defense and special teams Wednesday night at Eden Prairie, capitalizing off a number of uncharacteristic mistakes by the Eagles to pull off a 16-0 victory in the regular-season finale.

“We lost to them in the state championship game last year, so we wanted to come back here and get a different finish,” Wayzata’s Chris Pierson said. “Not many teams shut out Eden Prairie at home. It just feels great.”

Pierson had a big hand in that. The senior defensive back picked off a pair of passes and blocked a punt, which was returned by teammate Drew Greely for a second-half touchdown.

“We didn’t think either team was really going to be able to take control of this game,” Trojan coach Brad Anderson said. “We thought it would come down to special teams or a turnover or two — whoever would get a few more big plays would win. And did that ever ring true.”

Neither offense found any sort of rhythm on the night.

Eden Prairie gained just 165 total yards in the game and never came within 15 yards of the end zone.

The loss was the Eagles’ second in a six-day span after losing Friday against Edina, its first home loss in more than eight seasons.

Jeff Borchardt had the only offensive touchdown for Wayzata (6-1, 3-1), which came on a 4-yard run late in the first half. The Trojans also had a safety in the third quarter.
