Tom Compton, a tackle who helped Rosemount to the state semifinals in 2006, was taken by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday.

 

Compton started two seasons at right tackle and two at left tackle at South Dakota, making him the 12th Coyotes football player drafted and first since 1990.

 

"This is truly a great feeling," he said in a release on the Coyotes website.

 

The 6-foot-5, 314-pound Compton was a consensus All-America last season.

 

The Redskins needed depth on the offensive line. Left tackle Trent Williams, who missed four games last season for failed drug tests, is one failed test away from a yearlong suspension. Right tackle Jammal Brown has struggled with an ailing hip the past three seasons.

 

 

North Dakota State tight end – and Becker alum – Matt Veldman signed a free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

 

Veldman will participate in the Jaguars minicamp next weekend. 

 

Veldman started in all 15 games during NDSU's march to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision title in 2011-2012. He caught 26 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns, according to The Jamestown Sun.

 

 

Two University of Minnesota players and former Minnesota high school stars received invites to the Minnesota Vikings rookie training camp.

 

Defensive back Kim Royston and defensive lineman Anthony Jacobs will tryout for the club.

 

Jacobs started all 12 games at defensive tackle in 2011, recording 26 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles.
