After an early exit at the state tournament last season, the Mahnomen Indians will have another shot at redemption this year.

On Friday, the Indians took down the Browerville Tigers in the Section 6A championship game 28-7.

After a quick score on their first drive, the Indians were surprised by Browerville's athleticism. The Tigers' Ben Dreher beat two Mahnomen defenders for a 40 yard touchdown grab.

"Their initial speed caught us off guard," head coach John Clark Jr. said. "We didn't know they were that fast, but we did a good job of adjusting to that, catching up, and forcing them into throwing the ball more than they wanted to."

Their adjustments held off a tough Tigers' run game and forced the Browerville quarterbacks into throwing the ball, something they have not needed to do much this season.

The Tigers were inside the 10 yard line twice more in the first half. One ended with a missed field goal, and the Indians stuffed Dreher at the two yard line with three seconds left in the half on the other.

The Indians will now participate in the state tournament for the second year in a row. They will face a tough Braham team in the quarterfinals.

We're going to prepare the best we can," Clark Jr. said. "It's going to be a different test, they shotgun, spread it out and throw all over the field. We will need to get pressure on their quarterback."

The game is set for Friday, November 11, in Duluth.

A running attack that had worked for the Browerville Tigers all year long came up short in the Section 6A championship against Mahnomen by a score of 28-7.

Mahnomen went into halftime with just a 12-7 lead and at that point it was anyone’s game.

It was all Indians after that, as they would score two rushing touchdowns to put the game out of reach halfway through the 4th quarter.

Browerville finishes their season at a 9-2 record. Mahnomen improves to a perfect 11-0 and will face Braham on Friday, November 11th at Public School Stadium in Duluth at 8:00 p.m.

1. Avery Fairbanks, Mahnomen
Fairbanks was a force in the run game. He gave Browerville troubles all night as he carried the ball 20 tiems for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He also added five tackles on defense.

2. Jacob Pavek, Mahnomen
The Indians' quarterback didn't need to use his arm to beat Browerville because his legs worked just as well. He was the second leading rusher in the game with 18 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown.

3. Ben Dreher, Browerville
As Browerville's "go to" guy, Dreher always finds ways to help out his team. Usually it is on the ground, but it was as a receiver in this game. He had three catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. He was also always in on the tackles on defense. He finished with five solo tackles in the game.
