When the  Wheaton/Hermon/Norcross Warriors met the undefeated Eagle Valley Rebels in the Section 4 9-man championship game, they knew if they were going to win, they would have to shut down the state's leading rusher, Jacob Schauer.

They were able to do just that Friday afternoon to end the Rebels' season in a 50-16 victory.

"We played really well defensively and knew we had to keep Schauer in check with his rushing," head coach Tony Thiel said. "We knew this would force them to pass and our defense was ready for that as well."

The Warriors killed a long Rebels' drive in the second quarter with a long interception for a touchdown to give them a 14-8 lead.

After the Rebels' were able to cut the lead to 28-16 halfway through the third quarter, the Warriors' defense came up big yet again. They were able to come down with another interception and return it for a touchdown to steal the momentum and keep it as the Rebels were not able to get on the board the rest of the way.

"We just told them to keep playing hard and good things will happen," Thiel said. "After Eagle Valley scored, we told them they needed to answer and they responded."

The Warriors will head to state to take on the winner of Spring Grove.

"This has been a great group of kids to work with and been working hard all year," Thiel said. "They deserve this win."

After a closely played first quarter, Wheaton’s deep bench started to wear on the short handed Eagle Valley team. Wheaton turned on the heat in the 4th quarter and handed the Rebels their first loss of the season by a score of (50-16).

The Warriors running back Wolfgang Brink wore down the Rebel front line the entire game and it eventually opened up quite a few holes.

Wheaton returned two interceptions for long touchdowns that put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter.

This was the Rebels third trip to the section finals since 2000 and they have come up short each time.  They finish the season with a 10-1 record.

The Warriors move to 10-1 and will face Spring Grove at Spring Lake Park High School on Saturday November 12th at 1 p.m.

1. Wolfgang Brink, Wheaton
Brink was the source of many bruises for the Eagle Valley front line. He grinded out the yards for the Warriors throughout the game and opened up quite a few holes for the rest of the offense.

2. Tyler Schwagel, Wheaton
Schwagel was nearly perfect passing in this game and most of his incompletions came from drops off his receiver’s hands. He utilized his legs just as much as he ran into the end zone for a score and picked up several first downs on his own.

3. Jerod Nelson, Eagle Valley
Nelson was a small bright spot on the Rebel team in this game. He was the team’s leading receiver and made several tough grabs in traffic.
