Rebels ride Jacob Schauer's legs to a 5-0 record.

“Jake is going to be Jake, he’s going to do what he does.”

Eagle Valley quarterback Tyler Oftedahl could not have said it any better when referring to his teammate Jacob Schauer.

Schauer has been on a fantastic pace this year running the ball. Averaging more than 10 yards per carry and 200 yards per game, he came into the game with nearly 1,000 yards through the first four games.

Schauer busted down that that barrier on a 48-yard touchdown run in early in the game.

Schauer later a 65-yard touchdown run and carried his team when it mattered the most late in the game.

“5-0 is pretty cool, 1,000 yards in five games is pretty cool, but I don’t know, I give all the credit to the guys up front.” Schauer said.

The offensive line, which due to only dressing 21 players for each game, is also the defensive line, showed remarkable stamina. Even as Underwood pounded the ball with their big running backs throughout the second half, they still were opening big holes for the Eagle Valley run game and giving quarterback Oftedahl time to throw the ball.

Oftedahl would utilize that protection by throwing a season high eight completions and three touchdowns, but his voice may have made the difference. His hard count on fourth-and-two with 1:13 remaining got the Rockets to jump offsides.

“We weren’t snapping (the ball) no matter what. We were going to go four times and if they didn’t jump we would just call a timeout. Take nothing against this Underwood team, they came out and played a great second half.” coach John Sieling said.

After winning this game, and putting themselves in a good position to win the Pheasant South Conference, the Rebels have even higher goals for the season.

“Everybody talks about potential with our team and I hate the word potential. I feel like we have what it takes to go as far as state maybe. Why try for anything less than the best?” Schauer said.

If the Rebels are going to reach those goals, they can only hope for Jake to keep being Jake.

Game Recap

In a battle between two of the top teams in the Pheasant Conference, the Eagle Valley Rebels were able to hold off the Underwood Rockets by a score of 32-28.

Eagle Valley got off to a strong start pounding away with Jacob Schauer inside and Luke Mock outside. Quarterback Tyler Oftedahl threw a picture-perfect pass to wide-out Tate Benning for the first score of the game. Several minutes later Schauer would run in his first touchdown of the day from 48 yards out.

Each team would score one touchdown in the second quarter, but Eagle Valley took a 20-6 lead to halftime.

In the second half, Underwood used Kyle Jensen and Allen Peyerl to pound the Eagle Valley front line to wear them down.

The Rockets offensive line opened huge holes for their running backs and the Rebels did not help themselves with several penalties.

The Rockets used two long drives to pull within four points of Eagle Valley.

With 5:13 left in the game, and its lead down to four points, the Rebels handed off to its star on almost every single play.

On fourth-and-two, with under two minutes to play, Eagle Valley executed the freeze play to perfection, drawing several Rocket defensive lineman offsides and resulting in a first down.

Eagle Valley improves to 5-0 and will host the Ashby Arrows on Friday Oct. 7, at the Eagle Bend field. Underwood will host Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

1. Jacob Schauer, Eagle Valley
Going over 1,000 total rushing yards on the season in the first quarter of his fifth game should tell you all you need to know about Jacob Schauer. He continued his epic run with two long touchdowns in the first half to go along with 215 yards on the ground. The team handed the ball off to him exclusively on the final drive of the game to ice their opponent.

2. Tyler Oftedahl, Eagle Valley
Having a running back who produces as much as Schauer limits the role of the quarterback. But in this game, Oftedahl showed everyone he has quite the arm. With three touchdowns and 126 yards passing, Oftedahl helped pick up several big first downs after penalties set the Rebels back.

3. Tate Benning, Eagle Valley
Benning racked up 87 yards on four receptions to go along with his three end zone trips and took advantage of single coverage against a team stacking the box.
