The Eagles have won three in a row since a season-opening loss to Minnetonka

Mahtomedi gave up two fumbles and turned the ball over on downs twice in the first half of a showdown with Totino-Grace. Each time the Eagles made the Zephyrs pay.

The result was an insurmountable 30-6 halftime lead and a 30-13 victory for Totino-Grace on its homecoming Friday night.

Andy Mortiko caught three touchdown passes in the first half, all from quarterback Bob McDaniel.

“We took advantage of them,” Totino-Grace coach Jeff Ferguson said. “Our kids were very opportunistic. I was happy to see us make some big plays and come out of the gate strong.”

An opening-drive turnover by Mahtomedi allowed Totino-Grace to get the scoring started. On fourth down, McDaniel threw a 19-yard touchdown slant to Moritko.

After Mahtomedi failed to convert on fourth down, the Eagles regained possession again. A 33-yard run by Jeff Daugherty set up Paul Cassidy’s 22-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 9-0.

Another turnover on downs — this time a foiled fake punt — led to a 16-yard touchdown pass to Mortiko. On the ensuing kickoff, the Zephyrs fumbled again, this time near the red zone. Daugherty ran for a short TD.

Mahtomedi finally joined in on the scoring with a Jordan Goodmanson 30-yard fade to Kyle Thell. Totino-Grace responded with Mortiko catching a 15-yard touchdown pass as the first half expired with the Eagles up 30-6.

Goodmanson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Zach Lindquist, but the Eagles grabbed three interceptions to prevent any comeback.

After getting shut out by Minnetonka in the season opener, Totino-Grace’s victory over Class 4A, No. 6 Mahtomedi gives the Eagles a three-game winning streak.

“This is a big game for us,” Ferguson said. “They’re getting better every day, and they’ve made great strides since the first week.”
