A team could get used to beating up their opponents by outscoring them by a margin of 2-1.

After walking over Eastview and Apple Valley in its first two games of the season, No. 6-ranked Lakeville North had a challenge on its hands in the form of Edina on Friday, Sept. 16.

Sporting an identical 2-0 record, it could be argued that both the Panthers and Hornets would be facing their toughest matchup so far this season.

Though Lakeville North would double up against an opponent for the third time in as many games, the 27-14 Panthers' victory was much closer than the story the scoreboard tells.

Lakeville North had a slow start to the game which was partially due to Edina’s tough offensive line, according to Panthers' head coach Brian Vossen.

“Offensively they were able to kind of pound it slowly on us, and because they kept our defense on the field, we couldn’t get our offense on the field and I think our offense has the ability to score quickly,” Vossen said.

But by halftime the Panthers had found their groove.

Led by senior wide receiver Charlie Hayes, the Lakeville offense scored 14 unanswered points -- seven of those coming from Hayes in the form of a 30-yard touchdown pass. Hayes would eventually go on to collect 136 receiving yards in the game.

Hayes was humble about his role in the game, citing his defense for their role in the outcome.

“We knew they [Edina] would be tough,” Hayes said. “We knew our defense would keep us in the game and they did today.”

To make things even tougher, the game was a rare cross-conference matchup between the two teams, which meant there was plenty of pregame video analysis by Lakeville North.

“They run some double-tight formations that we don’t typically see, so anytime you play a team that’s not in your conference, that you’re not playing every year, you have to re-teach a little bit,” Vossen said. “We look for tendencies -- we thought they had some. But, in the first half they didn’t play to any of their tendencies. It’s like they knew what we were thinking.

“I think we ran into a solid team.”

Thanks to some adjustments and quality play from Hayes and senior quarterback Trey Heid -- who went 13-25 for 190 yards passing with two touchdowns, an interception and a rushing touchdown -- Lakeville North would stay among the ranks of the unbeaten.

Game Recap

Lakeville North senior quarterback Trey Heid threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Panthers defeated Edina 27-14 on Friday, Sept. 16.

Tied 7-7 after halftime, Lakeville North took over in the third quarter scoring twice and keeping Edina off the scoreboard.

Senior receiver Charlie Hayes caught nine passed for 136 yards and a 30-yard touchdown pass during the Panthers' 14-point third quarter. Hayes' touchdown would prove to be the game-winning score.

Heid ended the game with 13 completions in 25 attempts on his way to 190 passing yards.

As Edina star utility man Nick Rallis was held off the scoreboard, the Hornets' offense was powered by senior running back John Bryan who rushed for 139 yards on 39 carries. Bryan scored the Hornets' two touchdowns.

Regulation play ended as a short pass from Edina quarterback Mark Handberg was completed to Hornets' receiver Marley Allison. In an attempt to lateral the ball backwards, Allison tossed the football into the the hands of a Lakeville North player who rushed into the endzone to seal the victory. The play was in-question as the lateral appeared to be a forward pass.

Previously unbeaten, the road ahead for the Hornets (2-1) isn't an easy one as Edina will travel to Minnetonka (3-0) on Friday, Sept. 23 for a 7 p.m. Lake Conference matchup.

Lakeville North, now 3-0, will travel to Class 5A state runner-up Rosemount (3-0) also on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m.

1. Charlie Hayes, Lakeville North
After only one catch in the first half, the Panthers' senior wide receiver was unleashed and ended with nine receptions for 136 yards and one touchdown. Hayes' acrobatic, 30-yard third quarter touchdown reception proved to be game-winning score.

2. John Bryan, Edina

Defining the term 'power back', Bryan trucked his way to 139 rushing yards on 37 carries. The Hornets' 5-foot-10, 220 pound half back also rushed for the team's two touchdowns. Just how big of a game is that? Had the senior touched the ball just 12 more times -- which was very possible in Edina's run heavy offense -- Bryan would have held the state record for rushing attempts in a single game.

3. Trey Heid, Lakeville North

Whether is was a tackle-defying scramble or a deep ball that seemed to come out of no where, Heid proved what an offensive threat he can be. The senior quarterback had 13 completions on 25 attempts, accumulating 190 yards and two touchdowns. Heid also rushed for one touchdown.
