Cretin-Derham Hall defense stifles No. 10 Ponies

The Cretin-Derham Hall defense was as good as advertised Friday night in a 34-7 victory at Stillwater.

The Raiders offense, on the other hand, still concerns head coach Mike Scanlan — even after scoring 34 points.

“It’s been unbelievable. This is going to come off really bad, but I think we could have scored 50,” Scanlan said. “The defense kept giving us the ball and we just would not take advantage of it.”

After giving up only 15 points in their first two games, the Raiders didn’t let 10th-ranked Stillwater get on the scoreboard until the middle of the fourth quarter.

The Ponies have had Cretin-Derham Hall’s number the past two seasons, but the third-ranked Raiders left no doubt this time, posting 21 points in the third quarter. As the last unbeaten team in the Suburban East, it’s now Cretin-Derham Hall’s conference title to lose.

After each offense exchanged turnovers in the early minutes, Kevin Miley threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to James Onwualu to put the Raiders up 7-0.

Led by tackle Jonathan Harden and defensive back DJ Palmer, the Raiders suffocated Stillwater for the majority of the night, but the Ponies did have opportunities early.

Stillwater quarterback Nate Ricci took a number of big hits throughout the game. He was carted off the field after a rushing attempt in the fourth quarter and did not return.

“He’s the best kid we’ve seen in a long time,” Scanlan said of Ricci.

Kendrik Brewster topped 100 yards rushing, including a 48-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Cretin-Derham Hall led 13-0 at the half before the third-quarter burst.

Miley threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Tillman. The senior split time with junior Conor Rhoda, who added a 1-yard touchdown run and fired a 39-yard pass to Max Gardner, putting the game out of reach.

“I don’t think this is a reflection of who we are,” Ponies coach Beau LaBore said.
