Q&A with Park defensive tackle LaVonte Hardie

LaVonte 'Poppy' Hardie

Taking a timeout with Park of Cottage Grove defensive lineman Lavonte “Poppy” Hardie.

How long have you been known as “Poppy”? Since birth. My parents have called my that all my life.

Why? That’s a story you’d have to ask them. Everybody calls me “Poppy.” Even the teachers.

Are things any different at Park having a new coach in Darin Glazier?
No, not really. It’s organized pretty much the same. But Coach Glazier expects a lot out of you. He expects you to be at this place at this time.

What is your main goal on the defensive line? I basically want to destroy the guy in front of me. I go after the quarterback, but I also do my job and keep the offensive linemen off the linebackers.

Who are you role models? John Randle and Pat Williams. Williams got the job done as a run-stopper but surprised people with his quickness.

How big are you? I’m 5-10, 240 pounds. I’ve lost 10 pounds since football started. I’ve had to try to put the weight back on.

You’ve been on the varsity since 10th grade. What have you learned in that time? It’s not just about you. The team is more important. For us to win games, everybody has to do their job.

Park did not win a game last year. What are your hopes for this season? Last year, even some of the students thought we were a joke. I want to change peoples’ minds about what they think about Park.
