St. Anthony downed the Islanders last season

DeLaSalle lost to St. Anthony in last season’s opener 30-27 — a game that turned out to be the Islanders’ only blemish during the regular season and one that prevented them from claiming the Tri-Metro Conference title outright.

The Class 3A, Section 4 rivals and defending co-conference champs faced off again Friday night, this time at St. Anthony’s Dennison Field. Coach Sean McMenomy’s DeLaSalle squad made no mistake this time around, gaining revenge with a 26-5 victory.

“It was a big loss for us,” McMenomy said of last year’s defeat. “It’s one of those things that’s in the back of your mind. We grew from it.”

The Class 3A, No. 5-ranked Islanders came out flat in last week’s opener against Concordia Academy, and they did the same Friday. A botched punt in the end zone capped DeLaSalle’s first set of downs, giving the home team a 2-0 lead. That grew to 5-0 on the ensuing possession.
St. Anthony didn’t score again.

Reid Travis, the Islanders quarterback/man-child, began connecting with his receiving corps. A 16-yard touchdown pass to Ross Barker gave his team the lead and it never looked back. The 6-7, 215-pound sophomore QB found Marquise Bridges for a 5-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. A 64-yard passing play to Jacob Svanoe set up running back Chris Williams’ 2-yard TD run.

“We told him this is going to be his offense for the next three years,” McMenomy said of Travis. “Once Reid totally gets the offense down, he’s going to be pretty impossible to stop.”

Travis threw for 257 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Svanoe (105) and Barker (95) accounted for 200 of those receiving yards.

Jareid Combs tallied three sacks and forced a fumble for the Islanders, which linebacker Sam McCarthy recovered and returned 48 yards for a touchdown.
