The defending Class 5A champs struggled early against Prior Lake

It wasn’t pretty, but defending Class 5A champion Wayzata eventually rolled to a 47-20 football victory over Prior Lake on Thursday night.

In opening-game fashion, it was the effort that mattered for Trojans coach Brad Anderson. They can work out the details later.

“That was a first game for us,” Anderson said. “You could tell we had a lot of new guys who had never been on a varsity field or play significant minutes in a varsity game.”

Antonio Ford rushed for 104 yards on 13 carries, including a 19-yard touchdown run at the end of the first half.

Quarterback Nick Martin threw for 121 yards, including two touchdown passes to Jeff Borchardt, who ended the night with 95 receiving yards.

Senior Jack Kaiser got the home crowd going only three minutes into the game. Wayzata was called for offsides as the Lakers were set to punt. The running back used the fresh set of downs to catch a Topher Rose pass near the line of scrimmage before dancing his way to a 62-yard touchdown, giving the Lakers a 7-0 lead over the defending champs.

The Lakers defense held strong, making Wayzata kick field goals twice. Junior linebacker Will Long intercepted a Lakers pass and quarterback Nick Martin ran it in from the 6, giving Wayzata its first lead.

Both teams exchanged passing touchdowns in the second half to open up the scoring.

Lakers sophomore quarterback Nick Roney threw two TD strikes to senior receiver Matt Arends.

Martin responded with 25- and 70-yard touchdown passes to Borchardt.

Trojans junior running back Mitch Underhill was held out of the second half because of an injury. Anderson said he will be re-evaluated Friday.
