A blocked extra point by Chaska in the final minutes propelled the Hawks to victory Saturday in a 21-20 victory over Andover in a Class 5A semifinal game at Kuhlman Field in Edina.

Trailing 21-14 with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Andover intercepted a Chaska pass inside its own 30-yard line. The Huskies, driving into the wind, moved the ball to the Chaska 11. On fourth down-and-one, quarterback Connor Wilkie completed a touchdown pass to a diving Jacob Geier. Chaska then made the pivotal block, denying the extra-point attempt by Alex Probert with 1 minute, 51 seconds left.

“They went hard, got their hands up and made a great play,” assistant coach Bryan Dahl said.

Chaska quarterback Justin Arnold admitted that he was preparing to lead a drive for the victory when Andover score its third touchdown. The Hawks recovered the onside kick on the ensuing kickoff to seal the victory.

The cold, windy and turnover-filled game included a combined four turnovers in the first three minutes of the game. In all, there were five interceptions and four fumbles.

Andover fumbled the opening kick and Chaska recovered at the Huskies’ 27-yard line. The Hawks finished the ensuing drive with a 9-yard run by Kolby Seiffert. After forcing another Huskies turnover, Chaska scored its second touchdown on a 44-yard pass from Arnold to Calvin Buesgens to take a 13-0 lead.

“Our defense has been unreal all year,” Arnold said. “They’ve helped us in every single game, to get us into great field position.”

Chaska seemed poised to score again before fumbling deep in Huskies territory. Andover capitalized on the momentum swing and scored on a 26-yard touchdown from Wilkie to Chris Larson right before halftime.

The third quarter began just like the first, with the teams sharing turnovers and missed chances. But it was Andover that stood poised to cut into the Chaska lead multiple times in the fourth quarter. Twice Chaska’s defense held from inside the 5-yard line in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve told them from day one, we don’t care where the offense gets the ball. They believe they can stop it, they play hard and they buy in,” Dahl said.

Chaska moves on to face Brainerd in the Class 5A semifinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Metrodome.
