Minnetonka junior defensive back Raheem Brown did not get medical clearance to play until 5 p.m. Friday.

Fainting spells prevented him from playing in the second half the past two games and kept him out of practice all week leading up to a showdown with fellow unbeaten Edina.

The game did not disappoint. And coaches, players and fans on both sides of the field at Minnetonka High School probably felt like fainting at several points during the Skippers’ thrilling 28-27 victory.

Running back Adam Livingston scored with 10, minutes, 35 seconds to play and second-ranked Minnetonka (6-0) held on from there. Brown’s interception at the 5-yard line with 3:20 to play thwarted the best Edina (5-1) go-ahead chance.

“I was ready,” said Brown, who passed tests to rule out a concussion or asthma. An EKG revealed nothing, either. “Last year, Edina threw at me because I was a sophomore. I knew that if they did this time, I would pick one off.”

Brown’s play stood as a rare defensive highlight on a night where both offenses were doing damage. Coming into the game, Edina allowed an average of eight points per game compared to 9.8 for Minnetonka. None of that mattered.

Each team scored with less than one minute left in the first half and a blocked point-after attempt was the difference in a 14-13 Minnetonka lead at the break. Minnetonka senior Nehemiah Montague slipped around blockers and dived to block the extra point attempt.

The teams then traded touchdown drives to start the second half and drew even at 21-21. Minnetonka quarterback Aaron Syverson finished with a pair of touchdown passes. His Edina counterpart, Ryan Meyer, scored a touchdown both passing and rushing. His 25-yard bootleg put third-ranked Edina ahead 27-21 in the third quarter.

Brown’s interception did not end the drama. Minnetonka’s offense failed to move the ball and had to punt.

“We get another foot and the game is over,” Minnetonka coach Dave Nelson said.

Edina coach Derrin Lamker could relate to the agony of a near miss. Facing fourth and 13 at the 29-yard line, Edina’s offense turned the ball over on downs as a shotgun snap eluded Meyer.

“It was one of those games where every little play mattered,” Lamker said.
