First report

After guiding Osseo to 74 victories in 11 seasons, Derrin Lamker can put one in his personal win column at Edina.

The Hornets started fast in Lamker’s first game as head coach Thursday night, scoring touchdowns on their first four possessions in a season-opening 34-9 victory over Lakeville South at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina.

The first three scores came from workhorse running back Matt Cavanagh. The junior capped off a game-opening 18-play drive with a one-yard plunge across the goal line. He raced in from three yards out on Edina’s second drive to score again, and sliced down the middle of the Lakeville South defense from 12 yards out for touchdown No. 3. Cavanagh finished with 39 carries.

Edina senior quarterback Ryan Meyer didn’t have to throw much in his first career start, but when he did he looked to fellow senior Anders Nelson. Nelson made two third-down catches to keep Edina’s early scoring drives alive, and then earned a touchdown of his own when he out-jumped Lakeville South’s defensive back for a two-yard score in the final seconds of the first half.

Lakeville South (1-0) drove the length of the field on its first drive, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by John Olson. Jeremiah Johnson sprinted into the end zone for an 11-yard Cougar touchdown on the first drive of the second half.
