Recap: After Caledonia dominated previously undefeated Pipestone 40-0 for its seventh state championship, Caledonia coach Brent Schroeder refused to say where the 2015 edition of the Warriors would rank on the school’s list of great teams.

“We never dictate that one team is better than any other team,” Schroeder said. “The kids are in our hearts forever. We look at them all like a family, no matter if they win a state championship or not.”

By the numbers, however, it would be hard to find a better Caledonia team. The Warriors finished 14-0, outscoring opponents 667-69, including a whopping 497-0 in the first half of games.

Caledonia took the opening kickoff against Pipestone and drove straight downfield for a touchdown, taking a quick 7-0 lead. The Warriors extended the lead to 33-0 by halftime, taking advantage of three Pipestone turnovers.

For the game, Caledonia outgained Pipestone 394-127 in total yards. Three Warriors each scored twice: Sam Stemper rushed for two touchdown and Colton Lambert and Alex Goergen each two scoring passes from quarterback Owen King.

Key to the game: Pipestone won the toss, yet deferred to Caledonia, electing instead to receive the second-half kickoff. Caledonia scored right away on a six-play, 54-yard opening drive and never looked back.

Quote: “Sometimes, you shut out the other team 42-0. I think Caledonia is a little better than we are and that happens [to us] if we don’t play great. We can’t turn the ball over three times in the first half and expect that [not] to happen.” — Pipestone coach Clay Anderson

One thing to know: Pipestone’s top two rushers, Austin Moeller and McKinley Bush, were both unable to play in the championship game.

First report

If anything, Caledonia’s 40-0 rout of Pipestone in the Class 2A championship game showed that not all undefeated teams are created equal.

What was hoped to be a face-off between the two teams that clearly separated themselves from the rest of Class 2A -- both sporting 13-0 records -- turned into another laugher for Caledonia. The Warriors finished the season outscoring opponents 667-69 over 14 games.

The Warriors pulled away with a 26-point second quarter, turning a 7-0 first-quarter lead into a 33-0 halftime advantage. Three Caledonia players scored two touchdowns: Tight end Alex Goergen and running back Nick McCabe each caught a pair of touchdown passes and running back Sam Stemper rushed for a pair of scores en route to a game-high 172 yards on the ground.

Caledonia won its seventh state championship and its first since winning three in a row from 2010 through 2012.
