Game at a glance

Recap: Junior quarterback Brad Davison ran for one touchdown and passed for another — to Teddy Raasch in the corner of the end zone with 6.8 seconds left in the first half — as Maple Grove rolled over Wayzata for the second consecutive year. The Crimson (3-2) forced four turnovers and never allowed previously unbeaten Wayzata’s offense inside the red zone until midway through the final quarter.

Key of the game: With 1:10 left in the first half and trailing 7-0, Wayzata fumbled a snap at its own 45-yard line. Maple Grove recovered and capped the first half with Raasch’s touchdown.

Quote: “The defense won us the game tonight. I don’t know how many turnovers they had, but they were flying around, playing fast and playing with a lot of confidence. We didn’t have to do much [on offense] in this one.” — Maple Grove’s Davison

One thing to know: Maple Grove coach Matt Lombardi is now 2-0 against his former team.

First report

Junior quarterback Brad Davison ran for one touchdown and passed for another — a well-placed ball to Teddy Raasch in the corner of the end zone with 6.8 seconds left in the first half — as Maple Grove rolled over Wayzata 24-6 Friday night.

The Crimson (3-2) dominated on defense, holding the previously unbeaten Trojans to just one lone touchdown, forcing four turnovers and never allowing the Wayzata offense inside the red zone until midway through the final quarter.

Wayzata’s only scoring drive came in a hurry: Jake Marsh completed back-to-back passes, moving the offense 80 yards in two plays on an 18-second drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown catch by Brandon Bluford.

Davison and the Crimson offense, meanwhile, did more than enough for the victory.

Maple Grove scored on a 14-play, seven-minute opening drive in which the Crimson went three-for-three on third down and scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line — a keeper from Davison.

The Crimson tacked on scores in the second half with a 3-yard run from Sam Ross and a 38-yard field goal from Tyler Knutsen.

Maple Grove coach Matt Lombardi is now 2-0 against his former team, having won each of the past two seasons by a combined total of 58-13.
