Game at a glance

Recap: The Mustangs broke open a halftime tie at Stillwater with three consecutive touchdowns in the second half. The victory earned them the outright Suburban East Conference title and the No. 1 seed in next week’s Class 6A, Section 4 playoffs. Setting the tone for success after halftime, Mounds View drove for the go-ahead score in less than five minutes. Defensive back Alex Vijums helped keep Stillwater at bay with a pair of second-half interceptions, one in the end zone.

Key of the game: A field goal appeared to put Mounds View ahead by 10 points in the third quarter. However, Stillwater was penalized for roughing the kicker. Making the most of another chance, Mounds View scored a touchdown and built a 28-14 lead.

Quote: “That was absolutely huge. We were happy to go up by 10. But to score a touchdown there was huge.” — Mounds View coach Jim Galvin

One thing to know: Mounds View’s running back trifecta hit big. Danny DeWitt threw a halfback pass for a touchdown while Jeff LeMay and Joe Janey each found the end zone.
