Will Rains is a 5-foot-11, 215-pound wrecking ball. A wrecking ball with a wicked stiff arm.

The Eden Prairie senior smashed and pounded his way to 125 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the Eagles' 27-13 victory against Lake Conference rival Wayzata on Friday night.

The Trojans (2-5, 1-2) had no answer for Rains, who also caught an 8-yard touchdown pass on a broken play early in the fourth quarter to give the three-time defending state champion Eagles -- 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the conference and ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press state Class 6A poll -- a 26-13 lead.

Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant says Rains' presence is essential to the team’s success.

“Our whole offense kind of runs through Will,” Grant said.

Grant also said that Rains is an easy player to coach, making him all the more valuable.

“He’s as good a kid as you can have,” Grant said. “He’s very respectful, coachable, and loves coming to practice very day.”

While Rains, who transferred to Eden Prairie from Eastview this year, may look like a terror on the field, he wouldn’t describe his style of play as aggressive.

“I get fired up, but I’ve never really played with aggression,” Rains said. “I just play, and put everything out on the field for my team.”

Eden Prairie senior defensive back Blake Cashman said Rains’ off-field personality doesn't mirror his playing style.

“Off the field, he’s a great guy,” Cashman said. “He’s a little bit of a class clown, always making jokes, and he’s a lot of fun to be around.”

Cashman had a big game, too, intercepting two Trojans passes, including one the Eden Prairie end zone to snuff out any chance of a Wayzata comeback.

The victory marks the 24th consecutive win for Eden Prairie, dating back to last season. The Eagles take a lot of pride in playing a basic game. They prefer a simple rushing attack and consistent execution over the trendy spread offense, which is sweeping the game at all levels of play.

“It pays off,” Cashman said of the Eagle’s approach. “We’re 7-0, so you can’t really complain.”
