Game at a glance

There were signs everywhere in the stadium at Totino-Grace — the green socks and sleeves that both teams wore, the pregame moment of silence, the loud fourth-quarter chant from the student section.

A week after Totino-Grace senior Rachel Woell died from brain cancer, a still-grieving Eagles squad honored its longtime manager with what might have been its most complete performance of the season. Gayflor Flomo scored two touchdowns, Ben Mezzenga returned an interception 97 yards for another score and the Eagles routed previously unbeaten Elk River.

Key to the game: Totino-Grace scored two touchdowns just 11 seconds apart late in the first half. The second came on a pass from quarterback Lance Benick to Kez Flomo on the first play after a fumbled kickoff return by Elk River. The score put Totino-Grace up 20-7, and the Eagles never looked back.

Quote: “We knew that every down, every inch was for Rachel. I know she was watching down on us.” — Totino-Grace’s Mezzenga

One thing to know: Elk River came into the night averaging more than 48 points per game,, It scored its only touchdown on its opening drive.
