Game at a glance

Recap: There are no style points in football; sometimes it’s as simple as making one more play. Or, in this game,  two more. The Mustangs escaped with a victory over host Cretin-Derham Hall at O’Shaughnessy Field, surviving a late rally by stopping the Raiders twice in Mounds View territory in the final two minutes. The difference was a pair of long completions by Mounds View quarterback Joe Frederickson. He hit Mitch Vaske for an 85-yard score in the first half, giving the Mustangs a 7-6 lead. Then, with his team leading 13-6 early in the second half, he found Danny Dewitt for a 64-yard gain to the Raiders’ 1-yard-line. Joe Janey scored on the next play for a 20-6 lead.

Key of the game: Mounds View keeping Cretin-Derham Hall bottled up and not giving up the big play. The Raiders rarely started with good field position; Their two TDs came on 12-play drives.

Quote: “I still don’t know which team had the momentum at the end. But we fought and made the plays when we had to.” — Mounds View coach Jim Galvin

One thing to know: Cretin-Derham Hall’s defense had a terrific goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, stopping Mounds View five times inside the 2-yard line.
